North 2nd Floor Bathroom

In November 2006 we decided to start renovating the bathroom in the north suite on 2nd floor. John had talked to a number of contractors to see how we should take out the concrete & tile floor. We couldn't use a jack hammer to remove it because it is poured over wood floor joists and it would cause too much vibration. We looked at renting cement saws and they were like $50 for 4 hours and we had to buy the concret blade. So we decided to buy a concrete blade for our own circular saw.
Just to see how hard it would be to take out, John started cutting about 1 foot square sections. We knew where the floor joists were so made sure to avoid those. He started at the door of the room and cut , then using a large chisel and hammer, in the groove the saw cut, he would break out a piece at a time. Then he would hand it to me and I carried it into the kitchen and stacked them up. Later he hit his hand 2 times when he missed the chisel so we stopped. He had removed about half the floor. It went alot better than we thought it would.
That night we went shopping and he bought a small hammer drill to use instead of the chisel and hammer. The next morning John called the dumpster man and he delivered the dumpster and put it within a foot of the back door and directly under the bathroom window with John's help.
John and I opened the bathroom window and built a shoot from the window, over the 1st floor roof and into the dumpster with several pieces of flake board.
The 3 oldest grandchildren were with us this day, so I carried the floor we had taken out the day before from the kitchen to the bathroom window and Barret would take it piece by piece and put it out the window and slide it into the dumpster. Genevieve and Susana picked up the smaller pieces and rubble and tossed them out the window. Then they used a dust pan and brush to clean up the small rubble and put it into several 5 gallon buckets which John carried downstairs, out the door and emptied it in the dumpster.
Then the kids went into the living room and using the mini trampoline jumped alot and played in the sunroom with their toys while John and I took out the other half of the floor. He would cut and remove it and I would keep it cleaned up and out the window into the dumpster. When we were done, the girls cleaned up the last of the rubble and John carried it out in several 5 gallon buckets.
We found old plumbing that had been original to the bathroom that had been cut off and left while new plumbing had been put in from below.
The stool and claw foot tub were put into the kitchen and living room until we put the bathroom back together. I gave away the vanity with sink on freecycle.
We haven't worked on it for a while. When we do anything dust goes into the 1st floor north kitchen and I have to clean there and I don't want to have any dust on 1st when I might have guests at any time. I want to start working on this bathroom as soon as John has some time to start putting it back together.
We have to level the floor. That will be a big job and bring it up so we can put a new subfloor in. We plan to put in a good quality vinyl instead of tile. It will be easier to take care of and warmer to the feet.
The stool and clawfoot tub will go back into the bathroom. I have a pedistal sink that will go in. The metal medicine cabinet and mirror will be removed and a nice mirror will be put up. I also want to put plenty of counter space in so people have plenty of room for their items.
