Hawley Bed & Breakfast History

We found the Brandywine apartments and thought it met all the requirements for a B&B. It was opened in 1893 as 2 town homes. The builder lived in the south town home at 545 N 25th and he rented the north town home at 549 N 25th to a professor at UNL.
We sought the approval of the historic commission and the city council for the B&B which was granted prior to our purchase. Along with that, the house was declared a local landmark. We also were approved to replace the porch on the front of the house. Research at the Nebraska State Historical Society using the the Sandborn maps showed the footprint of the original porch.
We purchased the Brandywine apartments in February 1993 to convert into a bed and breakfast. John's job at UNL running the poultry farm was deleted when the poultry department was closed down. He was going to open the B&B and run it as his full time job.
I packed to move into one of the apartments, but John decided to buy the house across the street at 530 N 25th street, so we moved into that home and we continued to run it as 4 large apartments and John found a job with Neighborhood Services, later Neighborhoods Inc, later NeighborWorks Lincoln.
So we worked on the house and continued to rent 4 large apartments.
