We will be moving into the first floor of the Hawley House. Our first priority is to build a garage. In the mean time, we are trying to cut down on posessions since we now have 2 houses and everything must fit into the Hawley House.

We will have the 1200 square foot apartment on 2nd floor available as a furnished apartment for people coming to Lincoln that need more than several days in a motel but less than leasing an apartment.

Veterans Day - To honor US Military

TO HONOR U.S. MILITARY
Hundreds of Bed and Breakfasts are providing free rooms on Wednesday, November 10th, in observance of Veterans Day (November 11) to honor men and women currently serving in the military, as well as those or who have served their country in the past. Over 200 inns in 39 states and Canada have donated rooms for this holiday promotion.
The program was started in 2009 by the West Virginia B&B Association. "We just wanted to say thank you to the courageous men and women from our armed forces", says Kathleen Panek, owner of the Gillum House in Shinnston, West Virginia and originator of the concept. "These are trying times for anyone serving or who has served and a good night's rest is our way to say, thank you.
"The Hawley Bed & Breakfast in Lincoln, Nebraska is taking part in the Veterans Day promotion. "This is the best way for us to honor this country's military members", says Peggy Struwe owner of the Hawley Bed & Breakfast. "Not enough people realize what our servicemen and women face on a day to day basis in addition to those who have already put their lives on the line for our country and we are happy for them to stay with us as we celebrate Veterans Day."
Bed and breakfast inns are smaller hospitality businesses that offer a more personal touch than standard motels or hotels. All rooms have private bathrooms, comfortable beds, and beautifully decorated areas for relaxation or conversation.
Known for their great breakfasts and personalized service, B&Bs are a perfect way to enhance a getaway. Reservations need to be made directly with the participating inns. A valid military or Veterans Administration ID will be required for each reservation. Each participating Bed and Breakfast is making at least one room available on the night of November 10 and availability is limited to a first come first serve basis.

It is a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families and more than 600 museums across America offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families between Memorial Day, May 31, and Labor Day, September 6, 2010.

Rain barrel and garden workshop

April 10th the Hawley Area Neighborhood Association in the Malone area is having a garden workshop at the Malone Community Center, 22nd and U Streets. It starts at 10 AM. The first 50 Malone residents to sign in to the workshop will be given a free rain barrel. In the afternoon the HAA members will help you set up the barrels if needed.

The Hawley B&B will provide morning refreshments.

The Hawley Area Neighborhood Association (HAA) is sponsoring a rain barrel project. We have several members in HAA who took a neighborhood training course offered through NeighborWorks and chose the rainbarrel project as their course project. The HAA board is supporing their project and hope to be the first neighborhood association in Lincoln that is the expert in getting rain barrels in many yards to use for watering flowers and gardens.

50 rain barrels will be assembled and given away in the Malone area by HAA thru this rain barrel project. There will be a talk on urban gardening by the CROPS group. When people leave, they will be able to take 1 rain barrel home free (a $100 value). HAA members will help people install the barrels in the afternoon. Watch for the date of the event.

This last year we have offered buy one night and get one free to patrons of KCPT card holders (Kansas City Public Television). We continue to offer this to KCPT card holders.

I got an email from the card issuers telling me they will be adding the Hawley B&B to the NETV card holders (Nebraska Public Television). So if you have a NETV card ($80 level), you can also buy one night and get one night free at the Hawley B&B too. You must let me know about it when registering so we can make the appropriate charge.

Corn Maze near Denton, NE

Wayne Benson planted a 54.428 acre corn maze on his farm near Denton, NE. He has submitted his application to the Guinness Wold Records officials to become the largest maze.
The maze will open September 25th. 'Once inside, cell phone users can watch for signs that will give them information on how to get text messages for clues as they navigate the maze.'
The 'Can you hear me now?' guy is created in the corn maze which is sponsored by Verizon Wireless.
The maze will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from September 25 to November 1.
'This year the corn is very tall, which will make navigating the maze even more challenging. The easiest trail takes 10-20 minutes to navigate, the most difficult trail about 45 minutes to two hours.'
'There's also a trail that gets "haunted" after dark on Friday and Saturday nights beginning October 9. There is an admission fee for the maze.'

Culver's & Red Cross fundraising

The People's City Mission is selling rain barrels to raise money for the homeless.

The cost for a rain barrel with parts is $50 and you can put it together.

They also are selling a rain barrel for $100 that is assembled, delivered and installed.

Over the past hundred years, "chintz" has come to mean any floral printed furnishing fabric, usually made of cotton, and often glazed. Its origins as a hand-drawn and dyed fabric from India are often forgotten. Rosemary Crill will discuss these rare earlier chintzes and explore the background and development of this beautiful technique. She will also describe the use of chintz in Europe from the early seventeenth century to the mid-nineteenth century, first as bed curtains and wall hangings and later for popular men's and women's fashions.

Participants will begin to create a wall hanging-sized project featuring a hand appliqued flower and urn motif. Flower and leaf pieces will be cut from reproduction fabric and individually arranged. Some handwork experience is useful.

Cost:
$35 for Museum members, $45 non-members. $8 materials fee due to the instructor at the

Quilts made by Grace Snyder, an icon of American quiltmaking, will be exhibited at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum this spring. Recognized in the United States as one of the twentieth century's most accomplished quiltmakers, Grace's legacy lives on in the twenty-four quilts she created for exhibitions and competitions, several of which are included in this exhibition. (The image, right, is a detail from Grace's "Mosaic" quilt.)

In 1999, Quilter's Newsletter Magazine asked twenty-nine quilt experts to select the one hundred best American quilts of the twentieth century. In the first round of nominations, over half of the participants chose Grace Snyder's "Flower Basket Petit Point" which automatically qualified the quilt for inclusion in the final list. Finished in 1943, Grace made this remarkable masterpiece in sixteen months using approximately 87,000 tiny triangles to reproduce a china design produced by the Salem China Company of Salem, Ohio.

We went to the Golden Corral on Sunday and were surprised they no longer have punch cards. We found out that the restaurant has sold and has new owners. Everything else seems to be the same for now. So we will continue to recommend it and go there.

Ci Ci's Restaurant

Ci Ci's Restaurant has changed several things. They no longer have a salad bar, they have 2 types of salad you can pick from, but can no longer make it how you want it. Also the cheese sticks are no longer made. These were the things we went to the restaurant for and didn't really eat the pizza. So we are no longer going there, but would recommend it for people with kids that like the pizza.

William Jennings Bryan

William Jennings Bryan came to Lincoln in 1887. They purchased land 3 miles east of downtown Lincoln and named it Fairview. Later, they built a home there. The home and 10 acres was given to the Nebraska Methodist Conference in 1921 to build a hospital. It is now the location of Bryan Memorial Hospital.

Christmas Village at the Hawley B&B

The christmas tree was put up in the common sun room. The tree has white lights and small bubble lights, old fashion handmade metal tinsel icecicles., glass bulbs, and crocheted snow flakes.

John put up shelves to extend the window sills in front of the six windows in the sunroom. All of the village is lined up along the windows on these new shelves. John did a great job putting the shelves in. The houses are lit, little people are walking in front of the houses and others are skating or working.

We plan to leave the houses up year round, but the views will change. After christmas, the santa and other christmas items will be put away. Winter will be show cased with ice skating, snow, and other activities.

Wireless internet installed in Hawley Bed & Breakfast

Yesterday, my son came over and installed wireless internet at the Hawley Bed & Breakfast.
I haven't tried it in all corners of the house, but we have logged on in the common areas of the house, the first floor rooms and the porch. It should cover the whole house.
It is crazy what some systems require for a password, but this one required a 26 digit password so we had to come up with an easy one to put in.
Hope you all enjoy using the wireless when you stay with us.

Traveling exhibit "Lewis & Clark and the Indian Country"

Single room opened on first floor #2

This month we opened a new room with bath on first floor. The room is small and has a full size antique brass bed. The shower is a very large, tiled, in a room by itself, about 6 feet by 6 feet.
The bathroom is a large with pedistal sink and stool.
The room is right outside the beverage area and the other common areas, so very convenient for someone that has problems with stairs or wants to use the common rooms alot.

The Hawley Bed & Breakfast is 6 blocks east of the city campus at 25th and T Streets. If you stayed in our 4 room suite while attending UNL Parent's Weekend, you would have a bedroom with queen bed, living room, private bath and sunroom. You could also select our suite that has a mini kitchen bar with sink, small refrigerator (stocked with free refreshments), microwave, hot pot to make a late night hot drink, and table with chairs.

In addition to your suite, the first floor common rooms for everyone to use are dining room, sunroom, library, living room with TV and high speed internet and refreshment kitchenette with refrigerator (with more free refreshments), microwave, hot water pot for making tea, cocoa or cider drinks, and coffee.

(taken from the International Quilt Center information) Pojagi are Korean "wrapping cloths." In many countries, particularly in Asia, cultural traditions call for the use of beautiful cloth to wrap objects. In Korean culture, these wrappings have been and continue to be made in bursts of colorful patchwork or imaginative embroidery, in fine and coarse materials, and from small to large scale. Pojagi had many uses. They served to cover, wrap, store, and carry objects in the common activities of daily life. They were made as tablecloths, to cover food, to wrap wedding gifts, to carry possessions on a journey, and to adorn and protect sacred writings. Women used wrapping cloths filled with cotton batting and quilted to wrap fragile objects or to cover food to keep it hot. Pojagi also had special uses in elaborate betrothal and marriage customs and in religious devotional rituals.

GROUND BROKEN FOR “GREEN BUILD” HOUSE

City, HUD, UNL and NeighborWorks® partner on project Mayor Chris Beutler joined (U.S. Senator Ben Nelson and) other officialstoday in breaking ground for a “green build” house in the historic Clintonneighborhood. The design of the home at 631 N. 24th Street includespassive solar techniques, materials, and building methods essential forsustainable design.

Beutler said the innovative homeownership option ispart of the Stronger, Safer Neighborhoods Initiative he launched in March. Beutler (and Nelson) were joined by UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman; MacieHouston, Regional Director of the U.S. Department of Housing and UrbanDevelopment (HUD); andKevin Morris of the NeighborWorks® America district office in Kansas Cityas well as representatives of NeighborWorks® Lincoln and the UNL College ofArchitecture.

The project also is supported by State Farm Insurance andthe Woods Charitable Fund. “A key goal of our neighborhood initiative is to increase homeownership inkey areas of our City,” said Beutler. “Homeownership is essential tobuilding community pride, and this home will be a beautiful addition tothis historic neighborhood This project makes our stronger and saferefforts ‘greener’ as well.” The Clinton neighborhood is the target of ongoing revitalization efforts bythe City of Lincoln.This house is part of the design project for the UNL Archspace project. Agroup of 17 students have designed all parts of the home, which will besold to a participant of the NeighborWorks® Lincoln First Time Homebuyerprogram. “Hallmarks of UNL’s architecture program are the focus on hands-onexperience and a growing emphasis on sustainable building practices,” saidPerlman. “This project fulfills both those goals. We are proud that UNLstudents have been a part of this project in the neighborhood adjacent tocampus. Butterfly Pavilion at Folsom Children's Zoo

The Butterfly Pavilion opened May 24th, 2008 at the Folsom Children's Zoo.
The Butterfly Pavilion is a large enclosure that you can walk into and be in the midst of the flying butterflies from around North America. If you stand still some might even come and sit on you.
This is an unusual display for a zoo. Most zoo's don't have butterflies and to be able to enter their display and stand among them is very unusual.

Update June 27, 2008
We visited the zoo and the butterfly pavillion last night. We took 7 or the 8 grandchildren and 3 of their parents to the zoo last night. We were disappointed in the butterfly pavillion because it was late in the day. Most of the butterflies were at the top. The zoo assistant explained that because the pavillion was shaded by the trees and it was getting late (about 7pm) most of the butterflies had gone to the ceiling for the night.
It also seemed that there were less butterflies in the pavillion, so it is probably a little late in the year to see many.
So if you go, go during the day and not toward evening so you get to see as many as are available.

Ci's Ci's is a pizza buffet in a shopping center on North 27th north of Superior Street. They are North of Walmart, SAM's and Bed Bath & Beyond.
They have a small but good salad bar, pasta with 2 sauces and many pizza's and for dessert they have apple pizza, cinnamon rolls and cake brownies.
Kids 10 & under and seniors are $2.99. Others are $4.99 with drinks costing $1.19.
They will custom make pizza for you too at no additional charge.
We don't particularly like the pizza, so we go and eat the salad bar with the garlic cheese bread sticks and have cinnamon rolls for dessert.
We especially like to go there on days we are working in the yard or the house and don't have time to make lunch or if we have had a big meal for the day already, we will go there for supper.
All the grandkids love to go there too. It is very economical and family friendly.

The English Country Suite is open

The English Country Suite is open. The suite has a new bathroom and new kitchenette. The bathroom is still victorian with a claw foot tub and pedistal sink, but it also has a new 48 inch shower.
The kitchenette area has a small refrigerator, microwave and hot pot to heat water for tea or coffee. There is a small table and 2 chairs where you can eat snacks or order in pizza. The kitchen has silverware, cups and plates for your use. Feel free to bring in disposable kitchen items as needed.
There are 2 bedrooms. The large bedroom has a queen bed and the small bedroom has a full size bed.
In addition, there is a living room and sunroom.

Both bedrooms, living room and sun room have ceiling fans for your comfort.
This has been a labor of love for us and I hope you enjoy it.

The League of Women Voters, Lincoln/Lancaster County, NE board now meets at the Hawley Bed & Breakfast.

LWVLL had an open house for members and the public at the Hawley Bed & Breakfast in January. More open houses are scheduled for February 21 and March 20 from 5-7 p.m. Public is invited. Come visit with member and learn about LWVLL activities. Maybe there is something you would like to participate in.

This year there will be many chances to register voters and you can be part of that effort.

The Golden Corral in Lincoln NE is located at 3940 N 26th St, Lincoln. Their phone is (402) 438-0080.
They have a breakfast buffet on Saturday and Sunday and lunch and dinner buffet every day of the week.
The breakfast buffet is always the same.
The lunch and dinner buffet changes every day. There is always a salad bar, soup bar and dessert bar for all meals.
We have found it very reasonable and the staff are friendly and provide service with plates, coffee and drink refills. For most meals fresh rolls are bought out to your table in a basket.
Of all the places we visit, this is the one we visit most. They have an extensive senior following and have a room for meetings. There are lots of families who are able to move tables together and have a larger group.
It is close to the state fair park, and not far south of the 27th exit on I80.

The Hawley Bed & Breakfast has a 2 night minimum for all home football games. However our price is the same every day. We don't increase the price for home games as most hotels and motels do. We are about 1 mile from the stadium, within walking distance. The bus also runs 3 blocks from us and can get you within a few blocks of the stadium.

Cold Weather at the Hawley Bed & Breakfast

The day after the last post, Lincoln public schools and other schools were all closed. None of the Colleges or Universities were closed.
We had several warmer days in the 40's last week and most of the snow and ice melted on the streets, but we still have 3-4 inches of snow in the yards.
Saturday was a little warmer then Sunday and today are cold. Now it is 10 degrees, but wind chill is -6. It is supposed to warm up in a couple of days. We hope to get above freezing.
Bundle up and keep warm.

Today we are having snow. Schools around Lincoln are closing, but Lincoln Public Schools are still open.
Lots of accidents happening, so anyone in Lincoln or on I8O need to be careful. It is slick.
Over 50 accidents in Lincoln in 2 hours this morning when people were commuting to work.

Yesterday we had rain and it froze on the streets. Streets were coated with a thin sheet of ice.

John & I are working at updating the bathroom in a 2nd floor suite. It is alot of work and we plan to have it open by June. It will still retain the victorian home look but hope it will function better.

On the web site http://www.hawleybb.com I have put up a calendar for all of 2008. I start getting calls early for summer dates and football season. Several June dates are already booked for the first floor suite, so it was time to get the calendar up for the year.

As soon as the suite is open on 2nd floor, we plan to open a second suite soon after. Don't know if we will have it open for fall UNL football season or not, but hope so. The bathroom for that suite will be updated, but not as much as the other suite. It functions well now.

We have high speed internet access now, but not wireless. I plan to put in wireless before we open the second suite.

Better job posting to the blog in 2008

I have not been very good about posting to the blog, but do intend to do a better job in 2008.
What has been happening?
We have been having guests more this winter than last winter.
We also have been having more daytime meetings and hope businesses will remember us for their small meeting space needs.
The Lincoln Lancaster League of Women Voters board have started meeting once a month at the Hawley B&B. They also have started having an open house for members and visitors at the Hawley B&B on the 3rd Thursday of the month 5-7 p.m. The first one was held in January and everyone had a good visit. The next two are planned for February 21 & March 20 5-7 p.m. for members and the public. They hope to make this a monthly get together. Refreshments are served.

When we don't have guests on the weekend, we like to go to the Golden Corral for the breakfast buffet. The breakfast buffet is only available on Saturday and Sunday starting at 7:30 a.m.
They have a discount for seniors and for children.
For breakfast at least, juice is on the buffet as part of the buffet and coffee is not extra.
Breakfast always has the same items on the buffet.
There is a large bar with a variety of breakfast items, a salad bar, a dessert bar and a place where you can have an omlette or fried eggs made to order.
The lunch and evening menu offer a variety of different items depending on the day.
If you are going to be a regular, ask for a punch card. A full card of 10 punches gets you a free meal which can be used any time of the day.
The Golden Corral in Lincoln is on North 27th street between Cornhusker Hyway and Superior Street, about 2.5 miles north of the Hawley Bed & Breakfast.

dLeon's at 27th & Dudley

Last weekend we went to dLeon's again. John always gets the Lincoln which is a breakfast burrito. I usually get the beef burrito. Great as usual.
They now have a new drive thru on north 48th Street just north of Vine Street. They have opened several others and the original is on west O street. But we only go to the one close to us at N27th and Dudley.

The Nebraska State Fair is August 24 to September 3. The Nebraska vs Nevada University of Nebraska football game is Saturday, September 1st. So there is alot going on in Lincoln during this time.

Lancaster County Fair

The Lancaster County Fair is opening in Lincoln, Nebraska August 1, 2007. If you are from out of town and looking for a place to stay, please call the Hawley Bed & Breakfast in Lincoln, Nebraska to see if there is an opening.

The Fair is advertising that there is more food and more funnel cakes at the fair this year. I know last year there were long lines at the food vendors in the carnival area. Hope this helps alot.

If you are letting the kids ride the rides and they are going to be there a while, you might want to buy the armbands so they can have unlimited rides for the day. Hope they have fun.

The kids in 4-H have alot of exhibits. Please take the time to look at what they are working on. The animals are also fun to walk by and see how the kids are taking care of them.

We went to Culver's yesterday. It was so hot and we had a small mix in. Their food is always so good. The one we usually go to is on North 27th Street. I had the black berry and John had the turtle (hot fudge, caramel and pecans).

Lee's Restaurant

The Hawley Bed & Breakfast in Lincoln, NE was closed while we were on vacation in Colorado Springs visiting family. No food in the house, so we went to Lee's for supper. We had the fish supper. It is all you can eat, but I couldn't finish what was originally brought to me. John finished his but couldn't eat any more. We had ordered a small onion rings before supper too. They are different from anyplace else, and are hard to describe. They are home made rings mixed with a small amount of batter and stirred up. They come in a bowl of all crispy rings, but no longer holding shape.
The fish is very lightly battered, you can see the fish. Most baskets come with a basket of frys and a couple pieces of fish. Ours came with a few frys and a basket of fish. It also came with home made rolls and cole slaw. I don't like the slaw because it has horseradish in it and I don't like that, even if it is mild.
Lee's is located in southwest Lincoln on West VanDorn
Friday night and the parking lot was packed. There were several tables open so we were seated right away. Our order was taken soon after we were seated and the food came pretty fast. The service was very good.
There was also live organ music too.

John has finished removing boards between the floor joists in the north 2nd floor bathroom where we took out the concrete floor that was cracked. We are ready to start putting the floor back in after we level the floor joists. We want to also provide extra support under the claw foot tub at the same time. He can only work on it when he isn't working at NeighborWorks Lincoln and when I don't have guests in the first floor suite. I need to keep dust to a minimum so it takes longer to work on the bathroom.

Dairy Sweet, not close to the Hawley Bed & Breakfast

Our daughter lives south west of Lincoln and we have a garden on her acreage. We take the grandchildren for icecream sometimes when they have been working in the garden. Sometimes we go by ourselves on the way home. It is located at West Van Doren and Folsom. Across the street caty cornered from Lee's Chicken.
I love to go on Tuesday nights because she changes the chocolate icecream machine from chocolate to lemon, my favorite. Sometimes she has lemon in the freezer from Tuesday when she emptied the machine. That is great to take home too.
It is on your way to or from Pioneer's park, so plan to stop if you are near. It is seasonal and shut in the winter.

Culver's near the Hawley Bed & Breakfast

We love to go to Culver's for food, but especially icecream. Last night after going to the zoo, we stopped for a 1 dip turtle sunday. They were very good. We have had hamburgers, icecream mix in's, cones and a number of things on different visits. Everything has been good. We usually go to the one on North 27th that is near Sam's and Walmart. There is another one south of town too.

Children's Zoo near Hawley Bed and Breakfast

We went to the zoo last night. A.G. Edwards, Lau Financial Group and others had the zoo open 6-8 for their clients and families. We invited our s-i-l and 6 children. They all had a good time. After swim lessons, our d-i-l, her father and her 2 children arrived. We didn't get to do the zoo with everyone, but did spend some time with both families. I think the highlight for the kids was the train ride.
If you get a chance to go to the zoo, it is a big attraction in Lincoln. They have a petting area. Many animals can be fed small amounts of feed that you purchase for 25 cents. There is a store to purchase items that help support the zoo.
If you are interested in the butterfly room, you need to call, because it is not open all the time.

Tico's restaurant near the Hawley Bed & Breakfast

We went to Tico's last night for supper. I had the ticoritto and John had the tiaco. They were very good as usual. The ticoritto happened to be on special so it was $5.99 instead of 7.99, a good buy. John always orders extra sour cream which is served in a separate bowl for $1.50 for about 1/2 cup. Service was good and atmosphere is the same as it has been for a long time. It is well kept and looks authentic.

Rib Ranch Restaurant near the Hawley Bed & Breakfast

This is a late entry. On Monday, June 11th, John and I went to lunch with cousin Beth who was here from California. We went to the Rib Ranch. Beth and I split their new sandwich 'Nebraska Melt' and had 2 salads to go with it. This is a very good sandwich. The owner told us it was new and was going to be the lunch special on Mondays. John had a coupon for a free onion flower. It was excellent. Have to have more than 2 people to eat on it because they are always so big.
Very good lunch. Would recommend both the Nebraska Melt and the onion flower.

Golden Corral

John and I usually go to the Golden Corral on Saturday or Sunday mornings when they have a breakfast buffet. We go so often that we get cards to be punched. Well last night we used the punched cards for a free supper. John wanted to go Thursday night because they have ribs on the menu. Actually they had both pork and beef ribs.
They have one of the best salad bars around and I really love it. Also had a pork and a beef rib. Both were excellent. Also they had soup and I had a bowl of clam chowder. It was quite good. Desserts were the same as at breakfast, no change there.
All the food was good, but I usually hit the salad bar and pick up some meat to go with it. They had strips of sirloin on the salad bar and I tried that. It was good too.
Would recommend this place to anyone that wants to choose the food at a buffet.

The Rib Ranch

My cousins were in town and we went out for supper at the Rib ranch. The food is always good there. Helen and I split a prime rib sandwich and each had a salad. John had rib tips. Larry had a brisket sandwich. Everything was really good. John ordered apple crisp with icecream and Larry ordered a strawberry shortcake with icecream. Each dessert was enough for two.
Always a great place to eat.

Manse has a part time student

We have a graduate student for a few weeks who lives too far away to commute to class. She stays during the week and goes home on the weekend. This has worked out well and hope to continue to do this.

Room Rental at the Hawley Bed & Breakfast and at the Manse or 'Room for Rent'

We live across the street from the Hawley Bed & Breakfast. We have 3 dogs and our grandchildren have a place to come and not have to be quiet or out of the way. We live in the Manse, the house built as the parsonage for the church next door, originally the Vine Congregational Church but now the Christ Temple Mission Church. It is a modest home, but does have 4 small bedrooms on second floor. When we had the plumbing updated a few years ago, we had the basement plumbing extended to include a 3/4 bath at that time. The extra room in the basement was made into a dressing room for me. So we shower in the basement and I keep my clothes in the dressing room.
There is 1/2 bath on first floor. The parlor off the living room also has a closet and this half bath. So John has his clothes there and he claims that bathroom. But everyone uses that bathroom because it is so handy.
When we redid the plumbing in the house, the 2nd floor bathroom was totally removed. The plumber brought me a 1930 tub and I found a 1930 pedistal sink. The dresser that was built in was removed and refinished then put back in. A shower was put in over the tub and walls tiled. It is very nice but not often used because we aren't up there except to sleep. We have one bedroom and another is used for an office and sewing. The other 2 bedrooms have been updated with vanity and sink and storage when the bathroom was redone. I would like to start renting these to students that need to come to town on occasion. Not full time students, but ones that are more short term. So I guess I have a 'room to rent'. I have had students live with us in the past, but it is too much when they are there every day. I bought a small refrigerator for someone to use if they take a room.

Pawnee Lake near Lincoln, NE & the Hawley Bed & Breakfast

I had guests this weekend but on Sunday, they were busy, so John and I took our 3 oldest grandchildren to Pawnee Lake. Our son was camping there and had their jet ski's and tubes out on the lake. His wife's extended family had gathered there too, so there were lots of kids, toys to play in the sand beach and playing on the water on the tubes, rides in a boat, jet ski, or on a tube behind one. A great time was had by all.
As evening came, we all went back to the camp site and had a bountiful supper of grilled pork chops, pork steaks, beef steaks and hot dogs. Also many other dishes contributed by everyone.
I had taken a yellow cake meant for strawberry shortcake, leftover fresh baked bread from breakfast, and a coffee cake that got eaten by hungry kids during the day. Others had icecream bars, crackers and chips. When all the food was gone, I got out the big salad I had made for supper and all the veggies disappeared from that.
By supper time, my contribution was mostly lettuce from the salad and the strawberrys. But everyonone enjoyed what was put out and no one went away hungry.
We headed home with 3 tired kids that were sacked out before we got very far. John dropped me at home to take care of the dogs and I got all the trash out for trash pick up early the next morning. We unpacked the car and threw all the wet clothes and towels in the washer. Then time to head back to the bnb to put away dishes from breakfast that were in the drainer and spiff anything up. My guests were still out so spent some time on the computer and went to bed. Today is Memorial day and I would like to go to Wyuka Cemetery to see the flowers and look at the memorials.
